Dick DeVos: Philanthropic Work

Dick DeVos, the husband of Betsy DeVos, is a businessman, entrepreneur, and political activist. He is also a philanthropist. In fact, examples of his charity work were recently brought to the fore with Betsy DeVos’ recent nomination to the position of Secretary of Education. Recently, Dick and Betsy DeVos released details on their charity work.

 

Charity Work

The couple not only released the information to the vetting committee but to the public as well. Seen as a gesture of transparency, the report revealed that the DeVos have donated almost $139 million through the years to help support various charitable organizations. The bulk of their donations were given to education systems.

 

The couple gave $11 million in 2015. 26 percent of that was given to the education programs. The couple reports that they hope to address the various issues in the public school system. Dick and his wife also help Rehoboth Christian School, Northwood University, West Michigan Aviation Academy, and the Ferrari State University in Big Rapids among others.

Additionally, in 2006, Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy gave $12.5 million towards the physical construction of the Children’s Hospital via the Spectrum Health System. In fact, they were reported to be the top contributors in funding the center. It was named after Richard DeVos and his wife Helen DeVos, who provided financial relief to the numerous families who would have otherwise not been able to receive much-needed medical services.

 

Dick DeVos’ Work History

Richard (Dick) DeVos has a substantial resume. Here are some highlights:

 

Amway

DeVos began his successful career run in 1974. That was the year he signed on with the Amway company. The Amway company is private, family-owned business that is centered on multi-level marketing (MLM).

 

Upon hiring on with the company, DeVos was put in charge of a number of different departments including development, finance, marketing, research, and sales. In 1984 he became the vice president of the company. He was responsible for supervising business operations in 18 countries.

 

DeVos has helped the company grow by opening additional offices on other continents. He held the position for a total of seven years. At that point, he moved on to the Orlando Magic.

 

In 1991 Richard DeVos Sr took over as the owner of the Orlando Magic and Dick worked as the company president. In 1993, Dick DeVos left that position to work as the president of Amway. At that time he took charge of restructuring the MLM business.

 

DeVos chose to downsize the company as part of the restructuring. This resulted in the creation of the Alticor Company. DeVos worked as the company president until his retirement 2002. He would, however, go on to take the position of president of the Windquest Company.
